The programme is designed to be interactive throughout and result in practical skills developed from those mandated in over 40 countries to enhance commercial and military aviation safety. The tutors will make use of video clips and case studies from various industries to highlight specific issues and encourage group discussion and self-motivated learning. The course is designed for up to 20 team members
The introductory session sets the appropriate scene for the training event. It is an opportunity for the trainers and participants to share perceptions of what helps make work pleasurable and effective and the converse. The objective of the session is to make all participants aware that human error is inevitable but with a thorough understanding of the issues a well-motivated and skilled team can reduce the likelihood and consequences of any such error. We will introduce an objective, research-backed structure of team working behaviours that can be utilised by individuals and within the team. Atrainability tutors will use this framework in the coaching sessions that may follow.
This session will explore the way people prefer to think and interact with others in the workplace. Recognition of these effects can help in understanding why we naturally feel more or less comfortable with our fellow team members. It will become apparent that stress, workload and behaviour play an important role in this interaction. Links to these preferences will be made throughout the training day. Tutors are fully qualified in MBTI and SDI.
Behaviour & Conflict Management
The concepts of Transactional Analysis will be used to discuss recognition of developing conflicts and offer simple practical techniques to minimise such potentially dangerous effects. This can have real benefits with effective assertiveness skills in the face of hierarchical issues within a team
Ineffective communication lies at the heart of most adverse events. In this session effective and ineffective communication will be discussed using relevant examples. The importance of over-reliance on non-verbal communication in inappropriate situations is highlighted. Specific assertion techniques and suitable guidelines will be introduced to the participants as well as structures developed to minimise misunderstandings in critical communications.
Leadership & Teamworking
Are leaders born or trained? What are the different characteristics of leaders and managers? How do stress and high workload affect different people and how can effective countermeasures be utilised? This is a highly interactive session delving into effective teamworking utilising the experience and opinions of the participants as a basis. The effects of personality traits on Situational Leadership are discussed and the essential nature of concepts such as Emotional Intelligence will be introduced.
Merely by being human we are all subject to cognitive limitations. Research indicates that in all high-risk industries approximately 80% of all errors are caused because of cognition errors. During this enlightening session participants will be introduced to a simple model of how the brain works and the potential for error will be made abundantly clear.
Error and Violations
Douglas Bader said “Rules are there for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools”. But what causes our seeming natural propensity to break or bend the rules? This session examines what drives people to test the limits of acceptability and believe that they can succeed where so many have come up short.
Situation Awareness is introduced as a fundamental core of effective working in a high reliability environment. Achieving and maintaining a shared high level of situation awareness across the team is essential for success for the team and ultimately the organisation. The warning signs of loss of SA and tactics to regain and maintain a high level within the team will be demonstrated.
The latest research shows that humans make too many decisions by matching patterns that they hold in their long-term memory. In professional life there are many situations where this naturalistic method of decision-making is less than optimal. Understanding of alternative processes will be discussed during this session including a structure for knowledge-based analytical team-based decision making and problem solving.
This session brings together all the previous concepts into a cohesive whole that will be a centrepiece of effective teamworking. Briefing is a skill practised comprehensively in high-reliability organisations to build the team, level the hierarchy, combat potentially dangerous assumptions and prepare the team for potential threats to safety. Many individuals, especially leaders, believe they are very effective at briefing but bad habits can creep in over time and refreshing the concepts and skills aids the maintenance of an effective team
Debriefing is fundamentally about learning the day-to-day lessons from working together. It is about learning not unnecessary blaming and scoring points. In this module the benefits and skills of the team debriefing at the end of a working session will be discussed. In safety critical environments it is critical to capture the positive aspects and possible improvements that can be made within the workplace.
The Atrainability team, with the participants, will summarise the learning points from the course programme. It is also an opportunity for the course participants to reflect on their views of the effectiveness of the course and how the new skills can be effectively introduced into their working lives.
